Day 1

Arrive to Chicago

Arrive in the Windy City as you are met at the Chicago Airport by your local tour director. Then transfer to your hotel in the heart of Chicago. After some time to relax and freshen up, take a short walk to the starting point of  “The Mother Road.”  There is no better place to start your Route 66 experience than at the Historic Route 66 Begin Sign where you are sure to want a few pictures. Then join the group for a welcome dinner at a local restaurant. The evening is free to explore Chicago on your own.

Day 2

Chicago to St. Louis

Just a few blocks from the start of Route 66, Lou Mitchell’s has been dubbed the “first stop on the  Mother Road.”  You can enjoy a classic American diner experience, complete with fluffy pancakes, Belgian waffles and shakes — not to mention what the neon sign proclaims as “the world’s finest coffee.”  Throw in booth and counter dining, and it’s the perfect place to start your celebration of Americana.

After breakfast, depart Chicago and travel to Pontiac and visit the Route 66 Hall of Fame and Museum which is a repository for thousands of pieces of historic memorabilia from the glory days of the Mother Road. While cruising along Route 66, stop at a historic roadside diner for lunch on your own.

Then arrive in Springfield and visit the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum which documents the life of the 16th U.S. President, Abraham Lincoln, and the course of the American Civil War.  Combining traditional scholarship with 21st-century showmanship techniques, the museum ranks as one of the most visited presidential libraries.

After a great visit, cross the Mississippi and arrive in St. Louis, your home for the night. Enjoy a highlight tour of the city including the Gateway Arch before arriving at your hotel. Tonight take in the captivating views of this wonderful city as you join the group on a Skyline Dinner Riverboat Cruise. It will be an evening of great food, good company and wonderful views.

Day 3

St. Louis to Bentonville

As you continue west on the Old Road an iconic stop beckons, Meramec Caverns. Beneath the fertile rolling hills of the Meramec Valley, lies a complex of mineral formations and color as rare and unique as they are beautiful. These jewels of nature which took thousands of years to grow, are preserved in the spectacular sights of Meramec Caverns. Enjoy a guided tour of these beautiful caverns. Continue on to Cuba with time to explore the 14 amazing murals and other sights along the Route 66 corridor including the world-famous Route 66 Rocker. Your lunch will be on your own at a local Route 66 diner. In the afternoon, travel across Missouri to Arkansas and arrive in Bentonville to check into your hotel. After settling in, join the group for dinner at Simple Pleasures. Travel back in time as you dine in a restored 1930’s art-deco service station. Filled with cars and memorabilia, enjoy a delicious dinner while taking a trip down memory lane! Test your memory as you play a trivia game called “remembrance.” Dessert will be ice cream served from a real Sunday Cart with all the toppings. This is not just dinner, it is an experience!

Day 4

Bentonville to Tulsa

After breakfast, enjoy touring Bentonville, a small town with an interesting history as it grew into a city that is home to 3 major industries in just over 150 years. See some of the sights that helped to build the area, then visit the Walton 5 & 10/Walmart Visitor’s Center. Located in Sam Walton’s original Bentonville variety store, the center traces the origin and growth of Walmart Stores, Inc. The Downtown area also offers several shops with unique souvenirs. Your next stop will be the Museum of Native American History for touring. Learn about the culture and daily lives of the pre-historic residents of the area through a self-guided audio wand tour. Lunch today will be at Fred’s Hickory Inn, this was Sam’s favorite restaurant, the location where the name “Walmart” was created and billions of dollars of business have been conducted. After lunch, you are in for a real treat as you visit Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. Exhibits showcase art ranging from Native American to contemporary so you can experience the evolution of American art. Already considered by some to be the finest collection of American Art in the United States. After a surprising cultural experience in Bentonville, enter Oklahoma on your way to Tulsa for the night. After checking in, enjoy some free time to explore the Mother Road Market. Eat! Sip! Shop! Mother Road Market is Oklahoma’s first food hall focused on good food, unique retail, and offering Tulsa a vibrant space for the community to gather. Dinner will be on your own at the market.

Day 5

Oil Barons & Will Rogers

Depart Tulsa this morning and travel to the incredible Woolaroc Ranch and Animal Preserve. Located in the rugged Osage Hills of Northeastern Oklahoma, Woolaroc was established in 1925 as the ranch estate of oilman Frank Phillips. The ranch is a 3,700 acre wildlife preserve, home to many species of native and exotic wildlife including bison, elk and longhorn cattle. Woolaroc also has a wonderful museum with an outstanding collection of western art and artifacts, Native American artifacts, one of the finest collections of Colt firearms in the world, and much more. Enjoy time to explore the museum, the grounds and the petting zoo. Your lunch will be on your own today. Then drive to Bartlesville for touring of the Phillips Petroleum Museum. Determined to succeed and committed to innovation, Phillips became an industry leader, transforming basic oil and gas resources into an incredible array of useful products. Next travel to Claremore and the Will Rogers Memorial Museum. Will Rogers will meet the group and take you on a guided tour. Not only a cowboy, Will Rogers was also the top motion picture box-office star from 1933 to 1935, he is in the Aviation Hall of Fame, the International Polo Hall of Fame, was the most widely-read syndicated newspaper columnist by 1935, wrote six books, anchored America’s first coast-to-coast radio show in 1928, and was the star of a highly popular Sunday evening radio program of commentary and entertainment. He was certainly more than just a cowboy! After touring the museum, take a short drive to Will’s Birthplace Ranch, accompanied by Will’s dad, Clem Rogers. Enjoy a fun private dinner served in the barn and a chance to explore the grounds before returning to Tulsa for overnight.

Day 6

Route 66 in OKC

Today enjoy a journey along historic Route 66 on your way to Chandler for touring of the Route 66 Interpretive Center. The Center takes visitors on a visually entertaining “drive” from the 1920’s through current-day Oklahoma on what author John Steinbeck called, in his classic novel, The Grapes of Wrath, our “Mother Road,” Route 66. Then continue to POPS, an iconic stop along the Old Hwy, for lunch on your own. POPS is a traditional drive-in with all your favorite burgers, hot dogs, fries and shakes on the menu as well as pop. With over 600 different kinds of soda, a POPS soda guru can guide you to a refreshing alternative or an old time favorite. After lunch, arrive in Oklahoman City for touring the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. With more than 28,000 Western and American Indian art works and artifacts, the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum is home to one of the most comprehensive collections of Western art in the world. From fine art, pop culture and Halls of Fame to Native American objects, historical cowboy gear, shopping and dining, the Museum is a must-see destination. Enjoy a guided tour of the galleries and some free time to wander on your own. Check into your hotel with a little time to settle in. Then depart for the AAA Route 66 Road Fest with time to wander, explore and eat on your own. Later in this evening, return to your hotel.
